We spent four nights at the Hyatt Regency Malta during our trip through Malta, Türkiye, and Switzerland, using World of Hyatt points and a Suite Upgrade Award.

By the end of our stay, we came away pretty impressed.

The hotel has an excellent breakfast, a beautiful rooftop pool, a surprisingly good gym and wellness area, and a location that puts you right in the middle of St. Julian’s. We also received great treatment as World of Hyatt Globalists and got excellent value from our points.

But there are a few things we’d want to know before booking it again—especially the nightlife around the hotel, the somewhat awkward parking setup, and a Regency Club experience that was basically nonexistent during our stay.

So, is Hyatt Regency Malta worth it? For us, yes. But the location may not be for everyone.

Hyatt Regency Malta Location: Great If You Want to Be in the Action

Hyatt Regency Malta is located in St. Julian’s, close to St. George’s Bay, Bay Street, restaurants, bars, and the nightlife of Paceville.

And “nightlife” is worth emphasizing. This area is lively. There were people out, music playing, bars packed, and something happening almost every time we walked through the neighborhood. We enjoyed it. It had that energetic European summer feel, and we always felt comfortable walking around.

St. George’s Bay is roughly a 10-minute walk from the hotel, and we saw people swimming from early in the morning until surprisingly late at night. One thing Malta taught us quickly, though: Google Maps does not adequately prepare you for the hills.

A 10-minute walk might technically be 10 minutes, but that walk can include some serious inclines, declines, stairs, and uneven streets. If you’re planning to explore on foot, wear shoes you’re actually comfortable walking in.

The location worked extremely well for us. If you want a quiet resort where you barely know a city exists outside the gates, this probably isn’t it.

Our Suite at Hyatt Regency Malta

We used a Suite Upgrade Award on our reservation, and having the additional space for four nights was fantastic.

Our suite had a large bedroom, living room, good-sized bathroom, plenty of closet space, and a balcony overlooking the hotel’s piazza. After coming from our cave hotel in Cappadocia, having room to spread out felt especially nice.

And there is one oddly specific thing we absolutely loved about this room:

The air conditioning was fantastic.

Malta was going through an intense stretch of summer heat during our visit, and our room might have been the coldest hotel room we’ve ever had in Europe. That sounds like a small thing until you’ve spent an entire day walking around Malta in August.

The downside was the view.

Our suite was on one of the lowest guest floors, overlooking the piazza and the historic priory rather than the sea. We asked whether a higher-floor suite was available and were told the suites of our type were located on that level. It wasn’t a bad view, but after seeing the Mediterranean and sunset views from the rooftop, I definitely wished our suite had been higher.

The balcony did give us a direct view of the nightly activity in the piazza, including live music, so there was at least something going on below us.

The Rooftop Pool Was One of Our Favorite Parts of the Hotel

If you stay here, make time for at least one sunset on the rooftop. The rooftop pool looks out over St. Julian’s and toward the Mediterranean, and the views get especially good later in the day.

Food and Cocktails Were Better Than We Expected

One thing we didn’t expect Hyatt Regency Malta to do as well as it did was food and drinks.

Our first night, we ended up having dinner on the rooftop after striking out at the Regency Club. The setup was pretty casual—there was a DJ, a small grill on the pool deck, and skewers being cooked to order—but the food was legitimately good.

It felt less like a traditional hotel restaurant and more like an upscale rooftop pool party, which honestly matched St. Julian’s perfectly.

The cocktails were even better.

They weren’t just standard hotel-bar drinks with a fancy garnish. The menu had some real personality, with creative presentations and playful names. One of our favorites was a passion fruit and mezcal cocktail called Hotter Than Your Ex, served in a fire-hydrant-style glass.

That pretty much tells you what kind of bar this was.

The hotel also offered complimentary evening cocktails and small bites in the piazza during our stay, along with live music. We ended up stopping by more than once, and it became one of those little perks that actually added something to the experience rather than just checking a box.

The only downside was the pace of service. Like several places we visited in Malta, dinner moved slowly, and on that first night—after an early start in Cappadocia and a full travel day—we were much more interested in eating and getting to bed than settling in for a long European dinner.

Still, the quality was there.

The Regency Club Was Our Biggest Disappointment

This was easily the weakest part of the hotel for us. At check-in, we were told about the Regency Club and that food and refreshments would be available throughout the day. So on our first evening, hungry after a long travel day, we went downstairs expecting to grab something before dinner.

There was basically nothing there.

The lounge itself was down in the basement, it was hot, and there wasn’t anything that made us want to sit around waiting to see whether food would eventually appear. We never found much reason to return.

That’s particularly strange because Hyatt still advertises Regency Lounge access with refreshments and pre-dinner drinks on qualifying suites and club-level rooms.

It’s possible the offering varies by season or has changed since our stay, so I wouldn’t assume you’ll have the same experience. But I also wouldn’t choose this hotel specifically because you’re expecting a great Hyatt Regency Club.

Fortunately, almost everything else about our stay was considerably better.

Breakfast at Hyatt Regency Malta Was Excellent

Breakfast was one of the highlights of the property. As Globalists, ours was included, but this is one hotel breakfast I would have been genuinely happy with even without status. There was the usual assortment of pastries, fruit, cheeses, meats, cereal and other buffet items, but what stood out was how consistently they replenished the hot food.

Instead of forcing everyone into one long omelet-station line, they continuously brought out small portions of freshly prepared eggs—poached eggs, sunny-side-up eggs, omelets and other options.

Taryn isn’t nearly as interested in hotel breakfast as I am, and even she was impressed. Her favorite might have been these little crispy hash-brown balls that were basically miniature potato croquettes. There was also a self-serve mimosa station.

That’s the kind of hotel breakfast detail I can get behind. Service throughout breakfast was also consistently attentive, and overall this was one of the better Hyatt Regency breakfasts we’ve had.

Pools, Spa and Fitness Center

In addition to the rooftop pool, Hyatt Regency Malta has an indoor wellness area that gives the property much more of a resort feel than you might expect from its urban location.

The indoor pool is considerably calmer than the rooftop and is joined by sauna, steam and wellness facilities. The fitness center was another pleasant surprise. We travel often enough that hotel gyms can all start blending together, but this was a legitimately useful gym rather than a small room with two treadmills and a rack of dumbbells.

If you plan to spend most of your trip sightseeing, you may barely use these facilities. But we liked having them available after long days exploring Malta.

Parking at Hyatt Regency Malta

We rented a car in Malta because we planned to take it over to Gozo for a day of diving. If you’re doing something similar, Hyatt Regency Malta does have a parking garage underneath the property, and parking was complimentary during our stay because the hotel validated our ticket.

There isn’t a traditional hotel driveway and valet setup where you pull up, hand someone the keys, and unload everything. We parked underground, dragged our luggage through what we thought was the correct public elevator, came up outside the hotel, and then walked into the property.

Only afterward did we learn there was another entrance connecting the garage more directly to the hotel’s elevators. You still had to have the parking ticket validated before leaving the garage, though, so there was a little extra running around involved. If you’re arriving with luggage and aren’t renting a car, taking a Bolt directly to the hotel will be much simpler.

And unless you specifically need a rental car for your itinerary, we’d seriously consider using Bolt for most of Malta anyway. Driving there was considerably more chaotic than we expected.

Hyatt Regency Malta Globalist Benefits

We had a very good experience here as World of Hyatt Globalists, with the obvious exception of the lounge. When we arrived, the hotel had left sparkling wine and local snacks in our suite as a welcome amenity, which was a nice touch.

Breakfast was included through our Globalist benefits, and the overall service made us feel genuinely appreciated. I wouldn’t book any hotel assuming you’ll receive a particular upgrade or benefit beyond what’s guaranteed by the World of Hyatt program, but our experience at Hyatt Regency Malta was overall positive.

How We Booked Hyatt Regency Malta With Points

This stay was also a very good World of Hyatt redemption for us.

We stayed for four nights and paid:

We transferred those points from Chase Ultimate Rewards and then applied a Suite Upgrade Award to move into a suite. Is Hyatt Regency Malta Good for Couples?

We think so—especially if you’re the type of couple that likes having nightlife and restaurants nearby. That’s probably who this hotel makes the most sense for. You can spend the day exploring Malta, come back for sunset drinks on the rooftop, change clothes, and walk out into St. Julian’s without needing another taxi.

We also had one of our favorite meals of the trip at Caviar & Bull, roughly a 15- to 20-minute walk from the hotel along the St. Julian’s waterfront. If your idea of a romantic Malta trip is silence, secluded beaches, and early nights, though, I’d stay somewhere else.

Is Hyatt Regency Malta Good for Families?

It certainly can be, although I’d pay more attention to the location.

Hyatt currently offers both a two-bedroom Family Room and a two-bedroom Family Junior Suite, with the latter providing approximately 70 square metres of space, two bathrooms and a private balcony.

The pools and proximity to St. George’s Bay are definite advantages for families. The bigger question is whether you want to stay this close to Paceville and St. Julian’s nightlife with younger children.

How much you hear in your room will depend on its location, but travelers looking for a peaceful Malta retreat may prefer another part of the island.

Hyatt Regency Malta Review: The Bottom Line

We would stay at Hyatt Regency Malta again.

For us, the combination of a spacious suite, excellent breakfast, rooftop pool, strong Globalist treatment and a location in the middle of St. Julian’s made it a great base for four days in Malta.

The hotel isn’t perfect. The Regency Club was a disappointment, parking took some figuring out, and our suite’s low-floor location meant we missed out on the property’s best views. But none of those issues outweighed what we enjoyed about the stay.

The biggest decision really isn’t whether Hyatt Regency Malta is a good hotel. It is.

The question is whether St. Julian’s is the part of Malta you want to stay in.

If you like being able to walk to restaurants, bars, the beach and nightlife—and you want a full-service Hyatt to come back to after exploring the island—Hyatt Regency Malta is an easy hotel for us to recommend. If you’d rather wake up somewhere quiet and removed from the action, I’d look elsewhere in Malta.
