Andaz Papagayo Review: Mother-Daughter Memories Made Possible with Points
This post is a guest contribution from one of our incredible BoldlyGo community members, Shubha (@Shubha_r). Shubha is a runner, mom, entrepreneur, yogi, and travel enthusiast who recently enjoyed a special mother-daughter trip to the Andaz Papagayo in Costa Rica, booking the stay using Hyatt points. Her experience highlights how points and miles can turn meaningful moments—like celebrating a birthday—into unforgettable luxury travel experiences. We love showcasing real stories from within our community, because some of the best travel strategies come from people actually putting them into action. Our four-day escape to the Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo was more than just a vacation—it was a celebration for my daughter’s birthday, made possible by a little “points magic.”
Flying direct from EWR to LIR on JetBlue, we landed in Costa Rica ready for sunshine and relaxation. While the return trip via San José (SJO) was a bit of a trek during the busy Easter weekend, every moment at the resort made the travel logistics worth it.
We arranged a private transfer through Viator for about $90 from Liberia, while the longer transfer to SJO ran closer to $350.

Arrival & First Impressions at Andaz Papagayo: The “Point” of Luxury

Walking into the open-air lobby at Andaz Papagayo, the smooth check-in immediately set the tone. We were greeted with refreshing coconut water, and despite arriving early, our room was already ready.
We booked a King Forest View room using 45,000 Hyatt points per night, saving roughly $1,200 per night in cash rates. Even better, our room had a stunning partial bay view.
The room itself was massive with plenty of storage, but the highlight was the shower—floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking lush greenery. It felt like you were showering in the jungle.
And as a thoughtful touch, the staff surprised my daughter with a birthday dessert waiting in the room.
The Daily Rhythm: Breakfast & Beyond
Because we were using a Guest of Honor award, the breakfast situation was a dream. We bounced between the incredible buffet at Gaio (the smoothies are a must-try!) and the refined à la carte experience at Ostra.
The staff went above and beyond here—one morning, as we headed out for a hike, they even packed us fresh fruit and smoothies to go.
Resort Experience: Pools, Beach & Getting Around

The resort is sprawling and lush, built right into the hills. If you’re up for a workout, the steps and inclines will give your legs a run for their money, but the golf carts are lightning-fast if you prefer a lift.
As two adults, we bypassed the family areas for the adult pool, where the service was impeccable and the “sun beds” were the perfect place to lose an afternoon. This was our favorite spot. We also met other travelers who were also traveling on points, so it was a great bonding experience over some cocktails.
Beach Club & Spa Experience
For a change of pace, we took the boat over to the Andaz Papagayo Beach Club.
While high winds cut our beach time short (lots of sand blowing around), the boat ride itself was a highlight, and the beach was long, scenic, and great for walking.
Back at the main resort, I treated myself to a massage by the water, which was easily one of the most relaxing moments of the trip.
Dining at Andaz Papagayo: What’s Worth It
The food at the Andaz leans healthy and fresh. Dinner at Ostra was exceptional—the sushi and mains were top-tier. However, our night at the Latin tapas restaurant ( Chao Pescao) was the only “meh” moment of the trip; the food was subpar compared to the rest of the resort. If you’re choosing, stick with Ostra!
Final Thoughts: Is Andaz Papagayo Worth It on Points?

While a suite upgrade would have been the cherry on top, the “standard” room felt like anything but standard. Between the outdoor fitness area, the world-class service from the concierge, and that stunning Bay view, it was the perfect backdrop for a mother-daughter trip. If you have the points, don’t hesitate—just watch out for those windy beach days.
