Kimpton Grand Roatan Resort and Spa Review: Is This the Ultimate Caribbean Escape for Couples?

Kimpton Grand Roatan Resort and Spa Review: Is This the Ultimate Caribbean Escape for Couples?

Looking for that sweet spot where Caribbean luxury, real relaxation, and a bit of adventure all neatly come wrapped in palm trees and stunning turquoise water? Welcome to our experience at the Kimpton Grand Roatan Resort and Spa—a hotel that grabbed us by the senses from the moment we rolled up. If you’re a couple plotting a honeymoon, craving a romantic recharge, or just after a quick getaway, our honest, detail-packed review should help you figure out if this gorgeous spot should top your travel hit list. Buckle up, we’re about to paint the full picture—cocktails, coral reefs, and a few pro traveler tips included.

Arrival and Check-In: Setting the Vacation Mood Instantly

Aerial view of Kimpton Grand Roatan surrounded by lush jungle, with the resort’s pool and beachfront area in the foreground and the Caribbean Sea in the distance.

We’re big believers that a trip’s vibe takes shape the second you touch down, and Kimpton Grand Roatan set the tone just right—think warm welcomes, genuine smiles, and zero airport chaos. Roatan’s airport is no JFK but don’t let that fool you: as soon as we left baggage claim, friendly cab drivers popped up offering rides, no confusing shuffle or awkward haggling. We opted for a standard taxi (about $35 one-way) straight to the resort. For comparison, the hotel’s shared shuttle was $55, and a private ride? $120. Pro tip for couples: save your splurge for sunset cocktails, not the drive in.

Check-in could’ve been a mess. Our booking strategy meant juggling three separate reservations due to combining cash and points bookings (honestly, a little ambitious), each with its own confirmation number. The front desk staff? Absolute pros. They consolidated our full stay into one smooth check-in. Zero attitude, a genuine warm-up. They handed us perfectly gelled welcome cocktails (fresh, balanced, not that too-sweet punch you choke down at other resorts). Alcohol was totally optional as well.

From there, one of the staff hopped on a golf cart and personally whisked us to our bungalow, dropping golden hour and sunset tips along the way. The whole arrival just felt unhurried and, honestly, it marked a tone for our entire trip: we were guests, not numbers.

Getting Around: Easy Rides and Local Perks

Moving around Roatan is simple but it pays to know your options:

  • Hotel vehicles: Plush, easy, charge-to-room, but a pricier option if you’re calling cars frequently.
  • Free shuttle: Heads to the West End several times daily, lets you explore bars, shops, and colorful local life at zero cost.
  • Taxis: Plentiful near the airport/luggage claim, still the budget pick for quick trips.

We were grateful for the free hotel shuttle—West End has a totally different vibe from quiet West Bay, where the Kimpton sits, so it was nice to dip out for some local flavor without extra fees.

Our Bungalow: Homey Space with Serious Bonus Features

Let’s talk rooms. We chose one the larger bungalows set a short walk from the main building. These beauties look more like chic apartments than hotel boxes—imagine soaring ceilings, a split-level design, blackout shades (actually blackout, thank you), and enough space to store dive gear, beach bags, and those “just in case” extra outfits.

Amenities we loved:

  • A giant five-gallon water cooler (ditch the typical $7 hotel water bottles).
  • Loads of storage for all the random accessories a couple drags along.
  • Truly comfortable bed—we both slept like babies every single night.
  • Private deck for enjoying sunset or a quiet breakfast.
  • The outdoor shower. Top reason we chose this room! Imagine rinsing off your salty, sandy scuba toys under the sky, not dripping puddles back into your room.

Granted, there’s a steep little walk between the bungalows and lobby. It took us less than five minutes but if you have mobility concerns, consider a room closer to the main building—handrails help, but rainy days could make it a bit slick.

Pool, Beach, and Vibe: Where Roatan Magic Happens

Portion of the pool closest to the Beach Bar

Let’s be real—when you pick an island resort, you want the pool to wow you and the beach to deliver storybook moments. The Kimpton totally nails both.

Infinity Pool and Evening Rituals

Set at the quieter end of Roatan’s West Bay, the infinity pool somehow feels buzzy but never loud. We loved lounging in the water at sunset, rum punch in hand (staff keep them flowing, trust us), and vibing to low-key entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings. It’s all family friendly but refreshingly chill—no cannonball contests or shrieking kids ruining your Zen.

Beach Access and Clear Water

This is where things really shine. You can practically flop straight from your pool lounger into crystal-clear water teeming with fish. We kept saying it reminded us of the Maldives—really! The first step into ankle-deep water and bam—tiny tropical fish swirl all around. For us, this was hands-down one of the best right-off-the-beach snorkeling experiences we’ve had in the Caribbean.

The resort gives you snorkel gear and floaties as part of the amenity fee. Yep, there’s a small resort fee even if you book with points (so heads up for budget planners), but it covers handy extras you’ll actually use. Calm waves make it awesome for lazy floats too. If you forgot anything (or just love inflatables), a beach kiosk stocks sunscreen and a bunch of different float options.

Beach vendors do walk up if you leave the resort area—but on property, staff keep that at a minimum. Less sales talk, more relaxation. In other words, if you’re looking for peace, you’re in the right place.

Dining and Drinks: Top-Tier Taste, No All-Inclusive Snooze

Food at the Kimpton Grand Roatan Resort and Spa is all about getting what you pay for—no weak buffets, no “you’ll eat anywhere if you’re starving” meals, just real flavor and big portions.

Winning Food Options

While we did hit up some delicious local spots off site, the resort delivered every time when we ate in. Room service? Huge portions—our chicken sandwich was gigantic, super fresh, and shared between us with leftovers to spare. Perfect after a day burning energy in the salt and sun.

We had dinner at Alera (the on-site Mediterranean restaurant) which morphs from a breezy lunch spot to candlelit, sophisticated dinner space. Favorites included crispy pork belly porchetta (honestly, we’re still thinking about it), perfectly grilled local fish, and lots of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.

What impressed us:

  • Restaurant-quality food (not typical resort fare)
  • Attentive staff who actually ask and care about food allergies or dietary needs
  • Generous portions—no one leaves hungry

Cocktail Scene and Happy Hour Highs

Drinks here are elevated. We’re talking fresh-squeezed juices, the good stuff for alcohol, and every cocktail comes garnished like it’s in competition. Alera’s cocktail menu comes in a little booklet with stories about each drink—it reminded us of the best bars we’ve hit in big cities. Every evening, there’s a free lobby happy hour (5-6pm) with wines, rum punch, and some truly gourmet nibbles—lobster rolls, ceviche, and other chef-y bites. The happy hour is actually included, which is rare, and it bridges that gap between beach hunger and dinner.

The Breakfast Buffet: Breakfast for Champions

If you book with American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts (we used this for part of our stay), breakfast is included. Expect heaps of breakfast classics plus wild card local dishes—like barbecue chicken, buffalo eggs, tropical fruits, and all sorts of Honduran flavors. Skip the $30-$40 per person charges and tuck in.

Spa: Jungle Hideaway With World-Class Credentials

View from the hammock at the spa

The Kao Kamasa Spa at the Kimpton Grand Roatan is consistently ranked among the top 15 spas on the planet, this spot is a full-on retreat. There are private locker rooms (each with its own attendant), Jacuzzis, steam rooms, and jaw-dropping floor-to-ceiling windows that look straight into the jungle. Add to that multi-temperature plunge pools—indoors and out—and a giant hammock net strung over the jungle. It’s less “resort spa,” more “secret Bali sanctuary.” Total peace, birds calling, ocean breezes in the distance. We chose a couples massage (personalized to a T), then got lost in all the relaxation zones. Only reason we didn’t stay longer? Another dive scheduled, and even the amazing spa wouldn’t make us skip a Roatan dive.

Diving and Water Adventure: World-Class Reef, Steps from Bed

Scuba diver floating above the sandy ocean floor in crystal-clear blue water, fully geared with blue fins and patterned dive suit in Roatan.

Diving Roatan is legendary, and we were pumped. The Kimpton partners with West Bay Divers—they have a little desk right on property, which made planning a breeze. Formerly, dive boats would pick up at the resort dock; these days, you need to walk 15-20 minutes down the beach to their main center (or hitch a hotel shuttle for $5 round-trip, not per person). Small price for epic diving.

We dove almost in sight of the hotel every single day—200 yards or so off shore. The reef here is vibrant, like someone cranked up the underwater color. We saw corals, schools of fish, and so much more—visibility so good it nearly ruined us for everywhere else. Even if you’re not a diver, you can join a guided snorkel tour… or just gear up and step right in off the beach. That’s a huge win.

Value Check: Is Kimpton Grand Roatan Worth the Money?

Luxury in the Caribbean can eat through your budget like a piranha, so we kept score. Cash rates are often $400+ per night for our room type, but—here’s the thing—what you get for that price is honestly hard to beat:

  • Spacious, apartment-like rooms with practical luxury touches (seriously, the outdoor shower alone!)
  • Tranquil pool and nearly private feeling beach
  • Food that’s worth eating, even by pickiest couple standards
  • A spa that rivals the world’s best
  • Staff that treat you less like customers, more like actual guests

Cocktails run $9–$14 (not bad for the quality), and entrees feel fairly priced for the portions and prep (“generous portions” isn’t just menu fluff here). The included happy hour? Don’t miss that. Compared to other Caribbean luxury spots that parade Instagrammable amenities but miss on actual hospitality, the Kimpton feels authentic—and you can tell, they genuinely care.

And if you want to learn how we had stayed 4 nights for $69/night and free breakfast for our other nights, check out our full podcast episode where we talk about using points for a luxurious stay at Grand Kimpton Roatan Resort. You can also learn more about buying IHG points to get incredible redemptions at hotels like this.

Who’s Going to Love Kimpton Grand Roatan?

If you’re a couple who cares more about atmosphere and attention than brag-worthy nightclub parties, this is for you. We’d send our best friends here for honeymoons, anniversaries, or long-overdue romantic getaways. Got kids? They’re welcome, but don’t expect a full-on kids club scene—think calm, sophisticated, totally unstuffy. If you’re a points chaser, it might just top your redemption list. Beach bums, divers, foodies, and anyone who savors quiet, luxurious moments—you’ll feel right at home.

But if you need all-you-can-eat buffets or your dream getaway is wild pool games and nightly foam parties, there are other Roatan resorts that’ll suit you better.

Final Verdict: Would We Go Back? Absolutely.

To answer the big question—would we return? YES. Absolutely. We came for the diving, but it was the comfort, service, atmosphere, and just the feeling of relaxation that turned us into Kimpton Grand Roatan fans for life. Next time, we’ll probably ditch the heavy dive bags and just come to soak it all up. If you’re waffling over your next Caribbean vacation spot—move this one to the very top of your list.
